After the release of their debut full-length, Horsegirl have returned with a cover of Minutemen's timeless song.
Horsegirl has had a stellar year. Formed in 2019 in the Windy City, the trio is composed of musicians Nora Cheng, Penelope Lowenstein, and Gigi Reece, and although their sonority is obviously derived from a panoply of indie bands from the '90s, their attitude certainly promises to shake things off.
Their debut full-length - Versions of Modern Performance, out now on Matador Records - “is such a realized debut that it may itself influence a later generation down the road” (Ringer, Best Albums of 2022 So Far). Following their first-ever North American tour which included a sold-out hometown show at Thalia Hall and an opening slot for Pavement in New York, the Chicago-based trio now release their cover of Minutemen’s “History Lesson Part 2.”
While only available via a 7” in the past, the song is now available digitally for the first time. “‘History Lesson Part 2’ has always been a punk manifesto for us,” says Horsegirl. “It was an unusual pick to cover considering the lyrics are so specific to Minutemen, but we thought there was something appealing too about recording a 'History Lesson' that doesn’t actually give you any history on us."
Horsegirl were absolutely right, as their own version of "History Lesson Part 2" appropriates the punk ethos of the original song to chronicle the DIY experience that spans generations. Minutemen were a band ahead of their time and this cover proves it, sounding so unique and yet true to a tradition.
